The Eurofighter Consortium, comprised of four European nations (Germany, the UK, Italy, and Spain), is preparing for a new export campaign for the Typhoon multirole fighter aircraft. Consortium Chairman Jorge Tamarit Degenhardt listed Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Greece, Poland, and Portugal as potential new user countries.
This strategic move is expected to include the production of over 100 new Typhoon aircraft, in addition to recent orders placed by Germany, Italy, and Spain for their own needs.
Turkey Among Target Countries for New Eurofighter Export
Degenhardt stated that Turkey has emerged as a potential buyer in the context of ongoing government-to-government defence diplomacy with the United Kingdom. However, he also noted that political obstacles stemming from Germany have not yet been resolved:
“The Turkey issue is critical. It could be difficult to move forward without Berlin’s support. But there are significant opportunities in this direction.”
Saudi Arabia Considering Order for 54 New Jets
Saudi Arabia, one of the largest Eurofighter operators, is reportedly planning to add 54 new jets to its existing fleet of 72 Typhoons. Degenhardt described the interest as “a mission of the UK Ministry of Defence that has never failed so far.” This order is expected to be processed through the UK government.
Time Is Running Out: Window of Opportunity Shrinking
Degenhardt warned that delays caused by the previous German government’s opposition to exports could hinder progress, stating:
“The window of opportunity is not very large; we must act quickly.”
Call for Modernisation of the Eurofighter Typhoon
Tamarit Degenhardt called on the governments of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK to support a mid-life upgrade of the Typhoon platform. He noted that with the proposed enhancements, the Typhoon could remain operational until the 2060s and play a critical role as a “bridge platform” during the transition to next-generation sixth-generation fighter jets.
Approaching One Million Flight Hours
To date, 612 Eurofighter Typhoons have been produced and exported to several countries including Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, Austria, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The global Typhoon fleet is expected to surpass one million flight hours by the end of 2025.
