Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has introduced its new premium cabin concept for the Airbus A321LR fleet. These aircraft, which will enter service on 1st August, feature Etihad’s first-ever single-aisle aircraft with fully flat beds in the first class suites.
The new Etihad A321LR configuration is set to make an impact in the industry by offering a true three-cabin experience on medium-haul routes. At the front of the aircraft, there are only two first-class suites arranged in a 1-1 configuration. These suites come with a range of modern amenities, including sliding privacy doors, 20-inch 4K resolution entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, Qi wireless charging, and companion dining options.
Unlike its competitors, who market premium seats as part of a “business-plus” concept, Etihad positions these new suites as a full-service, genuine first-class product. This allows passengers to travel on Etihad’s flagship routes, enjoying the high standards of luxury and gastronomy without compromise, regardless of the aircraft type.
Business Class: Comfort and Efficiency Combined
Behind the first-class suites, there are 14 business class pods, also arranged in a 1-1 configuration. To avoid the additional weight of door mechanisms, sliding doors are not used in this section. Passengers will enjoy a comfortable flying experience with spacious seats, 17.3-inch 4K screens, and wireless charging.
Etihad will provide free messaging to all passengers and full connectivity with streaming-quality service to premium passengers via the Viasat satellite Wi-Fi system across its entire A321LR fleet.
Economy Class with Widebody Comfort
In the economy class cabin, which has a capacity of 144 passengers, there are 18.4-inch wide seats, each equipped with a 13.3-inch 4K entertainment screen. USB charging ports are provided as standard, and 36 seats offer extra legroom for greater comfort.
With these innovations, Etihad claims to offer widebody comfort even on narrow-body aircraft. However, the real passenger experience will be evaluated in detail once operations begin.
Strategic Network Planning and Future Vision
The ten A321LR aircraft Etihad plans to add to its fleet by 2025 will serve three main strategic objectives:
-
Offering premium services in markets where widebody aircraft capacity is economically unfeasible (such as Chiang Mai and Algiers).
-
Operating flights to first-class holiday destinations within a four-hour flight distance from Abu Dhabi (for example, the Seychelles).
-
Increasing flight frequencies to business hubs like Paris without adding widebody aircraft.
Etihad has also launched a billion-dollar renewal programme covering its Boeing 787-9, 787-10, and 777 aircraft. Innovations will also be announced for the special “Residence” cabin on the Airbus A380 by the end of the year.
These investments support Etihad’s “Journey 2030” strategy, which focuses on fleet expansion, passenger growth, and global network development.
