Tragic Crash Following Engine Failure
The accident occurred in the evening near Harrison, between exit 2 northbound and exit 3 southbound on the highway. The Tecnam P-2008 plane carried two people, one of whom lost their life, while the condition of the other remains unclear.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the pilot had declared an emergency due to engine failure and was attempting to divert to White Plains Airport. The plane crashed at approximately 7:15 PM local time near Westchester County Airport.
Harrowing Moments Revealed by Air Traffic Data
Live air traffic data revealed that the aircraft had departed from Linden Airport in New Jersey at 6:09 PM local time. While flying north along the Hudson River, it suddenly lost altitude at a rate of 1,000 feet per minute before diverting toward White Plains Airport and issuing a distress call. Shortly thereafter, the plane crashed onto the highway.
