Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced plans to equip 300 aircraft with high-tech telemedical stations to provide passengers with faster and more advanced medical support during flights. The airline stated that this system would enable cabin crew to offer more effective assistance to passengers in emergencies.
Advanced Telemedical System for Instant Intervention
The new system will feature high-definition video conferencing, remote passenger assessment, secure data transmission, and advanced medical capabilities such as 12-lead Telecardia ECG. Emirates developed this innovative health solution in collaboration with French telemedicine firm Parsys, investing over $2.4 million in the project.
With this technology, passengers’ vital signs will be automatically transmitted to the MedCapture device via Bluetooth, allowing the cabin crew to connect with medical experts in real time without manual data entry.
How Does the Telemedical System Work?
According to the airline, the MedCapture device is equipped with newly developed software tailored to Emirates’ medical procedures. The tablet-based system has an intuitive interface designed to facilitate crew use even in challenging conditions.
Developed through a year-long partnership between Emirates and Parsys, the new system aims to offer passengers a safer, more connected, and efficient flight experience.
What Will Change with the Parsys Telemedicine Kit?
The Parsys Telemedicine Kit and Parsys Cloud, integrated into Emirates’ fleet, will enable the cabin crew to collect vital medical data and transmit it directly to Emirates’ 24/7 Ground Medical Support team based in Dubai.
The kit includes:
- Pulse oximeter
- Thermometer
- Blood pressure monitor
- Glucometer
- Electrocardiogram (ECG)
The system facilitates real-time communication between cabin crew and ground-based medical teams, allowing doctors to perform remote visual assessments.
Life-Saving Technology
Emirates highlights the critical role of its partnership with Parsys in managing in-flight medical emergencies. The airline cited an incident during a flight to Lyon, France, where an elderly passenger experienced a cardiovascular emergency and a sharp drop in oxygen levels.
The cabin crew swiftly provided oxygen and transmitted the passenger’s vital data to medical experts via the MedCapture device. Parsys Cloud enabled doctors to guide the crew, helping stabilise the passenger until landing.
Comprehensive Telemedical Training for Cabin Crew
Emirates has ensured its cabin crew receive extensive medical training to handle emergencies. Crew members undergo an intensive eight-week programme covering first aid, CPR, AED usage, allergic reactions, and childbirth.
Experienced crew members must also complete a 1.5-hour online course, a two-hour practical session, and in-flight simulation training annually. The Parsys MedCapture system is fully integrated into Emirates’ training programmes, ensuring crew members can utilise the technology effectively during emergencies.
Emirates’ Major Investment in Passenger Safety
The airline has announced that Parsys kits are being integrated across its fleet. With this technological investment, Emirates reaffirms its commitment to innovation in aviation healthcare, aiming to raise in-flight medical care standards and enhance passenger safety.
