EASA Grants Type Certification for Airbus A321XLR with Pratt & Whitney Engines

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued the Type Certification for the Airbus A321XLR powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines. This certification follows the approval of the A321XLR with CFM LEAP-1A engines in July 2024 and paves the way for the first customer aircraft with Pratt & Whitney engines to enter service later in 2024.

A New Era in Aviation: The A321XLR

Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Christian Scherer highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating:

“The A321XLR is already demonstrating its remarkable versatility in daily transatlantic operations. With the certification and entry into service of the GTF-powered A321XLR, we will see even more operators introducing this game-changing aircraft. Additionally, the new direct city-to-city connections, enhanced by increased cabin comfort, will be a major advantage for passengers.”

Key Features of the A321XLR

  • Extended range and fuel efficiency: Consumes 30% less fuel per seat compared to previous-generation competitor aircraft.
  • A true alternative to wide-body aircraft: Offers airlines flexibility to increase capacity, open new routes, and quickly adapt to changing demand.
  • Comfortable Airspace cabin: Enhances passenger experience on long-haul flights.

A321XLR Testing and Orders

  • The first A321XLR completed its maiden flight in June 2022.
  • A comprehensive certification programme involved three test aircraft.
  • As of 2024, the A321XLR has entered service with over 500 orders received.
