German authorities have raised security measures to the highest level due to the increase in suspicious unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) activities in the country’s airspace. Following the detection of hundreds, even more than a thousand, suspicious drone flights since the beginning of the year, joint defence centres against drone threats have started to be established.
Holger Münch, President of the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), stated that more than a thousand suspicious drone violations were recorded nationwide from the beginning of the year until mid-December. Münch noted that a comprehensive analysis of these flights has been prepared in coordination with the German Armed Forces.
Military and Critical Infrastructure Are the Targets
Münch emphasised that most of the suspicious drone flights primarily target areas with high security and military sensitivity. These areas include:
- Military bases,
- Airports,
- Ports,
- Defence industry facilities and critical infrastructure.
Cautious Approach to Russia Claims
Commenting on claims that the incidents may be linked to Russia, Münch stated that identifying the individuals operating the drones is extremely difficult and that, at this stage, no definitive conclusion can be drawn.
Joint Drone Defence Centre Established in Berlin
The German government has established a joint defence centre against unmanned aerial vehicles in Berlin in response to the growing threats. The centre aims to enhance the early detection, tracking and neutralisation capabilities of drones. Authorities announced that the centre will become operational in January.
In addition, a unit consisting of specially trained personnel has been formed within the Federal Police to combat drone violations.
Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems Deployed
As part of the security measures;
- Artificial intelligence-supported electronic jamming systems,
- Autonomous interceptor drones,
- Advanced sensor and surveillance technologies
will be used. These systems are planned to be deployed especially in Berlin, at airports and at strategically important facilities.
Alarm Level Rising Across Europe
Experts point out that there has been a noticeable increase in suspicious aerial activities across Europe. NATO member countries have raised their alert levels due to drone violations alleged to originate from Russia.
It is assessed that the steps taken by Germany could set a precedent for airspace security and drone defence strategies across Europe.
