Direct Flights Between TRNC and the UK Discussed

The Speaker of the TRNC Republic Assembly, Zorlu Töre, met with Conservative Party MP Iain Duncan Smith, who is campaigning for direct flights between the UK and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

During the meeting held in the Honor Hall of the Republic Assembly, Speaker Töre stated that the Greek Cypriots and Greeks are responsible for the division of the island of Cyprus, and that Southern Cyprus should be the party to be punished. He emphasized that the island is sufficient for Turks, Greeks, and the British base areas, and that they will not abandon the two-state solution.

Speaker Töre highlighted that the Turkish Cypriot people will continue to live in their own state and land. He mentioned that the Green Line Regulation could be expanded and that economic issues could be jointly addressed. Töre also stated that direct flights to Ercan Airport should commence, and he expects this step to be taken by the guarantor country, the UK.

Smith: “Direct Flights and Property Investments on the Agenda”

Conservative Party MP Iain Duncan Smith said that they had a very productive meeting with President Ersin Tatar, where they particularly discussed direct flights and property investments. Smith stated, “We know that 300,000 families have contacts here. I have brought to the government’s attention why these people are not benefiting from direct flights. I hope to discuss this issue again with the new government and perhaps see some progress.”

Smith emphasized that the continuation of the agreed-upon process regarding property is in everyone’s best interest and that problems should be solved with equal representation, equal status, and equal means. He noted that this is one of the fundamental principles of the Anglo-Saxon legal system. Smith expressed that the current situation is unsustainable for anyone, and a solution where the rights of both sides are protected should be reached.
