Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 Collides with Empty Aircraft During Pushback at Atlanta Airport
A Boeing 757 aircraft operated by Delta Air Lines (DL) made contact with a parked empty plane during pushback from the gate on Sunday morning at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The incident occurred just before the plane’s departure to Guatemala City (GUA).
According to Delta’s statement, there were 192 passengers, 2 pilots, and 4 cabin crew on board. No injuries resulted from the contact. After the collision, the flight crew halted operations, and ground personnel inspected the aircraft for any damage.
Passengers Flew on Alternative Aircraft
Following the incident, passengers were transported to Guatemala City on another assigned aircraft after a brief delay. Delta confirmed that safety protocols were fully followed and that the involved aircraft was taken out of service for inspection.
Risks of Busy Ramp Operations
Airline officials noted that such contacts during pushback can result from environmental factors such as limited maneuvering space, visibility issues, and ramp congestion. Atlanta Airport is the world’s busiest airport by annual passenger traffic, requiring a high level of coordination between pilots, ramp crews, and air traffic control.
Delta Air Lines emphasized that operational safety remains its top priority, ground handling procedures are designed to minimize aircraft contact risk, and such incidents are managed with full transparency.
