About 40 minutes into the flight, crew members detected smoke and an odor in the cockpit, prompting an emergency diversion to Raleigh-Durham Airport. The plane landed safely at 5:02 PM local time, with 151 passengers and six crew members on board. Passengers were later flown to DCA on another aircraft.
Delta stated, “The flight was safely diverted, and our customers were promptly placed on a new plane. Safety is always our top priority, and we apologize to our customers for the delay.” The replacement flight departed RDU at 9:14 PM and landed at DCA at 10:04 PM.
FAA to Investigate the Incident
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The FAA confirmed the emergency landing after reports of smoke in the flight deck and noted two other similar events involving Delta flights within the same week.
Two Additional Delta Emergency Landings This Week
On November 5, 2024, Delta flight DL809 returned to San Jose International Airport following a possible bird strike. The Boeing 737-900 safely landed shortly after takeoff around 1:00 PM local time.
Additionally, on October 29, 2024, Delta flight DL2133 from Fort Lauderdale to New York LaGuardia (LGA) made an emergency landing after reports of a foul odor in the cabin. The aircraft returned to Fort Lauderdale just 16 minutes after takeoff, and passengers were transferred to another flight to New York.
