A large-scale overnight operation by the Indian military targeting Pakistani territory and the Azad Kashmir region has reignited tensions in South Asia. In response to the attacks, Pakistan temporarily closed its airspace, a move that affected the flight routes of Turkish airlines.
South Asia is facing a new crisis centred on Kashmir. The Indian military launched a night-time operation targeting northern regions of Pakistan and the disputed territory of Azad Kashmir. Following the operation, the Pakistani army retaliated, and due to the escalating military tension in the region, Pakistan’s airspace was temporarily closed to all flights.
Turkish Airlines Alter Flight Routes
Civil aviation was severely impacted by the decision. Turkish Airlines’ flight to Islamabad and Pegasus Airlines’ flight to Karachi diverted via Iranian airspace and returned for security reasons. Both flights are expected to land at Istanbul Airport later today.
Authorities have announced that flight plans will be revised once the risks in the airspace are mitigated. Airlines continue to provide real-time updates to passengers.
Kashmir Crisis Flares Up Again
The Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan has persisted for decades, occasionally bringing the two nuclear-armed nations to the brink of war. Although administered by Pakistan, Azad Kashmir is claimed by India as its own territory. This latest operation is being described as the most serious military escalation since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
While there has been no official statement from the international community so far, analysts warn that the situation could trigger a crisis threatening regional security.
