Czech Airlines’ Final Flight: The End of a Century in Aviation

On Saturday, October 26, Czech Airlines (ČSA) will mark the end of a 100-year chapter in aviation history with its final flight from Paris. This last flight will signal the end of Czech Airlines’ operations as an independent carrier, with its OK-coded flights disappearing from the skies for good.

Founded in 1923, Czech Airlines, despite its long-standing history, has weakened over recent years due to financial difficulties and management missteps. According to Radio Prague, the airline’s troubles began with failed privatization attempts in the 1990s, which deepened over time. The 2008 financial crisis, the rise of low-cost airlines, and the COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced the airline’s fleet and route network.

Czech Airlines’ History and Transformation

Czech Airlines holds a significant place in aviation history. As the fifth oldest airline in the world, ČSA was once in the same league as major airlines like Dutch KLM, Colombian Avianca, Australian Qantas, and Soviet/Russian Aeroflot. However, after being acquired by the Smartwings group in 2018, the airline ceased its independent operations.

The final flight of Czech Airlines symbolizes not just the closure of a single airline, but the end of an era in aviation history. Now integrated into Smartwings’ portfolio, Czech Airlines will continue its journey under a new identity.
