Croatia Receives its Ninth Rafale Fighter Jet

In November 2021, Croatia signed a major agreement with France to purchase 12 Rafale F3R fighter jets, marking one of the country’s largest air force modernization programs. The ninth aircraft in the order was delivered to Croatia on 24 January, replacing the aging fleet of MiG-21 Lancer jets.

The Croatian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the two-seater jet, with tail number “156,” has joined the 191st Fighter Squadron of the 91st Croatian Air Force Brigade (HRZ) based at Pleso Airbase. The integration of Rafale F3R jets into the Croatian Air Force began in 2023, with the first delivery from France. Since then, pilot and crew training has progressed rapidly, while facilities to house the jets are under construction.

The €1 billion agreement between Croatia and France includes not only the aircraft but also pilot and crew training, maintenance services, and infrastructure investments. The new jets will replace the Soviet-era MiG-21 Lancers, which are nearing the end of their operational lifespan. The Croatian Ministry of Defence announced in December that MiG-21 aircraft have officially ceased their airspace surveillance and defense missions. These responsibilities are currently being temporarily handled by Italian Eurofighter jets and Hungarian Gripens under international agreements.

France plans to deliver the remaining three Rafale jets to Croatia by the end of April. With this delivery, the Croatian Air Force will reach a significant milestone, equipped with upgraded air defense capabilities for the modern era.
