The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a new Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB) regarding Russian Federation airspace.
The latest advisory replaces the previous CZIB 2022-01R10 recommendation and extends its scope. According to the bulletin, all flight operations are advised to avoid Russian airspace west of the 60° East longitude at all flight levels. This recommendation applies not only to European Union airlines but also to carriers holding a Third Country Operator safety authorization from EASA.
Advisory Details and Duration
EASA’s new advisory will remain in effect until July 31, 2025. However, it may be reviewed, adjusted, or withdrawn earlier based on safety and security assessments.
EASA, in collaboration with the European Commission, continues to monitor the situation closely to evaluate the risk exposure for EU carriers operating flights.
EU Carriers Not Operating in Russian Airspace
Currently, no European Union airline operates within Russian airspace. However, despite EASA’s warnings, some third-country carriers continue to utilize this airspace.
Background: Conflict Zone Warning System
Following the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the European Union established the “EU Conflict Zone Warning System” to enhance airline safety. Active since 2016, this system facilitates intelligence sharing and collaboration between EASA, EU Member States, and aviation stakeholders to address risks from conflict zones.
The system focuses on the following goals:
- Sharing information on risks originating from conflict zones,
- Issuing timely and effective recommendations to safeguard EU passengers,
- Supporting national security efforts with a European perspective.
