Which Regions Are Affected?
India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced the temporary suspension of flight operations at 24 airports nationwide due to regional tensions with Pakistan. Previously in effect until 10 May, the measure has now been extended until 15 May 2025 as part of enhanced security precautions.
This security-driven decision affects strategically located airports in northern and western India. It has been emphasised that the move aims to protect areas that are critical for both civilian and military operations.
Airports Closed to Flights
According to the Ministry’s official statement, the following airports have been temporarily closed to air traffic:
Chandigarh, Srinagar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bhuntar, Kishangarh, Patiala, Shimla, Jaisalmer, Pathankot, Jammu, Bikaner, Leh, Porbandar
These terminals serve not only civilian passenger traffic but also play a significant role in military and humanitarian air operations.
Passenger Advisory and Alternative Travel Options
Civil aviation authorities have advised passengers with planned flights to the affected airports to consider alternative routes. Airlines have also announced that they will facilitate cancellations and changes to bookings for affected travellers.
Regional Tensions and Security Measures
Escalating political and military tensions between India and Pakistan—particularly in the Kashmir region—have heightened sensitivities. The government is taking precautionary measures to mitigate potential threats through restrictions on air traffic. Officials have stated that the decision aims to maximise passenger safety.
Duration of Closure Depends on Developments
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has indicated that a new assessment will be made after 15 May, with further updates and potential revisions to the timeline to be announced based on regional developments. Ongoing information will be shared with the public through official channels.
