ACI EUROPE collaborated with the Turkish government to strengthen the critical role of Turkey’s aviation sector in economic and social development. The discussions focused on addressing key challenges to ensure the sustainable growth of air connectivity.
Momentum and Records in Turkish Aviation
In a meeting with Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, ACI EUROPE Director General Olivier Jankovec praised the remarkable growth of Turkish aviation. Turkey’s total air connectivity has increased by 24% compared to pre-pandemic levels, surpassing the European average of -14%. Notably, İGA Istanbul Airport, ranked 5th in Europe for direct connectivity in 2019, now leads in first place.
Jankovec emphasized the economic significance of this growth, noting that airport connectivity contributes €47.2 billion to Turkey’s GDP and supports 500,000 jobs.
Key Agenda Items
The discussions centered around these critical points:
- More Airlines and Liberal Policies: Advocating for open skies policies and granting traffic rights to more airlines to enhance economic benefits and boost Turkish tourism and trade.
- Airport Fee Regulation: Proposing market-aligned adjustments to airport charges to address inflationary pressures.
- Sustainability and Climate Action: Stressing the need for a regulatory framework to accelerate the adoption and supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
- Air Traffic Management and Ground Operations Integration: Highlighting innovative models like İGA Istanbul Airport’s three-parallel-runway operation to enhance air connectivity.
Turkey’s Net-Zero Emission Target
Turkish airports are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. However, reducing scope 3 emissions (those from aircraft) hinges on the adoption of SAF. The report emphasized Turkey’s opportunity to lead by establishing a robust domestic SAF supply chain.
This collaborative dialogue reinforces Turkey’s strategic position in the global aviation landscape and its commitment to sustainable development.
