China has carried out another remarkable test flight with the J-36, a 6th-generation stealth fighter jet marking a new era in military aviation. First taking to the skies on 26 December 2024, the aircraft is claimed to have reached hypersonic speeds and even exited the atmosphere into space.
The latest trial of the J-36 surprised analysts who had predicted the aircraft’s maiden flight would not take place until 2028. Experts stated that China’s rapid progress may have been supported by preliminary tests that had not been disclosed to the public.
The fact that the first flight coincided with the birthday of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China, carried symbolic meaning within the country. Chinese commentators noted that the date was no coincidence, describing it as a “tribute to the leader’s legacy.”

Outperforming America’s F-35
According to Chinese state media, the J-36, developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, stands out with its artificial intelligence support, advanced manoeuvrability, and stealth features. Experts suggest the aircraft is capable of surpassing not only the US-made F-35 but also Russia’s Su-57 fighter jet.
The landing gear being visibly extended during the test flight was considered a sign that the aircraft is still in its development stage. Nevertheless, the J-36 has already been recorded as one of China’s most ambitious military power projects.
