Taking a new step in its journey of advancing military technology, China has publicly showcased its J-35A fighter jet for the first time. Presented at Airshow China 2024 to mark the anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAF), the J-35A stands out as a 5th-generation fighter jet.
J-35A: A Design Similar to the F-35
China’s J-35A bears striking similarities to the U.S. F-35 Lightning II fighter jet. Equipped with stealth technology, powerful engines, and advanced radar features, the J-35A is designed to bolster China’s air force. First flown in 2021, the J-35A is an upgraded version of the original J-35 and plays a crucial role in China’s goal of modernizing its military strength.
China to Become the Second Country with Two Stealth Fighter Models After the U.S.
With the introduction of the J-20 in 2017 as its first stealth aircraft, China made significant strides in aerial warfare. The entry of the J-35A into service will make China the second country, after the U.S., to operate two distinct stealth fighter models.
Allegations of Technology Theft Resurface
The J-35A’s development has reignited longstanding allegations of technology theft raised by the U.S. There have been claims for years that China illegally obtained advanced F-35 technology. In 2015, German media reported NSA documents alleging that Chinese hackers accessed critical F-35 data, such as radar and engine schematics. However, Beijing denies these accusations, insisting that the J-35A was developed independently.
China’s Growing Global Influence in Military Aviation
The development of the J-35A reflects China’s ambitions to establish itself as an independent power in military aviation. Set to fly at next week’s airshow in Zhuhai, the J-35A is regarded as one of China’s most advanced aircraft, intended to strengthen its airspace presence.
Details About the J-35A Aircraft
Although being showcased at Airshow China 2024, Chinese military-affiliated media describe the J-35A as a “5th-generation stealth fighter independently developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).” Military experts anticipate that China may expand this series with other configurations, like the J-35C for aircraft carriers, in the near future.
