China Airlines to Place $4 Billion Order for New Aircraft

China Airlines is nearing a decision on a major order to renew its long-haul fleet, expected to split the approximately $4 billion order between Airbus and Boeing. According to Reuters, the Taiwanese carrier is preparing to expand its fleet with new wide-body aircraft from both manufacturers.

Expected Orders: Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777X

China Airlines’ order is anticipated to include 10 Airbus A350-1000 and 10 Boeing 777X aircraft, mainly to serve long-haul routes between Taiwan and the United States. The airline’s current long-haul fleet consists of 15 Airbus A350-900 and 10 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The new order aims to replace the existing 777-300ER planes, which are currently between eight and ten years old.

In 2022, China Airlines also ordered 16 Boeing 787-9 aircraft to replace its Airbus A330-300 fleet. At the 2023 Paris Air Show, this order was increased to 24, with the addition of six 787-8 models. The first 787 is expected for delivery next year. For narrow-body operations, China Airlines is transitioning from Boeing 737NG aircraft to the Airbus A321neo.

Decision and Approval Process

The order, which awaits board approval, could also include a separate cargo aircraft order. Political relations between the U.S. and Taiwan, particularly following the U.S. presidential election on November 5, may influence the airline’s decision. However, China Airlines Chairman Hsieh Chien stated that their decision is based on market demand, technical assessments, and commercial factors.

Global Demand for A350 and 777X Models

Since 2015, Airbus has received over 1,340 orders for its A350 program, with most choosing the smaller -900 variant. Despite certification delays for Boeing’s 777X, which has now been pushed to 2026, the model has garnered more than 500 orders and continues to build confidence among airlines.

China Airlines’ split order between Airbus and Boeing will play a strategic role in connecting Taiwan to global markets by meeting its wide-body aircraft demands.
