Cathay Pacific’s (CX) flight CX811 was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) on January 20, 2025, due to smoke detected in the cabin. The flight was originally bound for Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).
Cabin Smoke Alarm: Squawk 7700 Declared
The Airbus A350-1000 departed Boston at 02:04 EST but stopped climbing at approximately 5,000 feet, about 30 minutes after takeoff, and initiated emergency protocols. Unable to reach cruising altitude, the aircraft performed holding maneuvers in the Boston airspace to complete fuel-dumping procedures before the emergency landing.
The flight crew declared an emergency by transmitting the squawk code 7700 to air traffic control, indicating a state of urgent priority as defined by international aviation regulations.
Safe Landing in Boston
According to FlightRadar24 data, the aircraft returned to Boston Logan International Airport 17 minutes after departure. Emergency response teams were on standby to ensure the plane’s safe arrival. Once on the ground, passengers were evacuated, and a detailed inspection of the aircraft began.
The flight was operated by a 4.5-year-old Airbus A350-1000 registered as B-LXM. Although scheduled for a transpacific journey, the flight could not proceed due to the smoke issue detected in the cabin.

Cathay Pacific representatives stated that passenger and crew safety was their top priority during the incident. Investigations are underway to determine the source of the smoke. Meanwhile, Boston Logan International Airport officials commended the emergency response teams for adhering to protocols effectively.
