The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has announced that five people lost their lives in a cargo plane crash in the country’s southwest on Saturday evening.
According to a statement from the SCAA, the DHC-5D Buffalo aircraft, registered as 5Y-RBA, crashed at 17:43 local time (14:43 GMT), approximately 24 kilometres southwest of the capital, Mogadishu. It was reported that all five people on board the aircraft perished in the crash.
The aircraft, operated by Kenya-based Trident Aviation Ltd., had taken off from the strategically significant town of Dhobley in southwestern Somalia and was en route to Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
While SCAA officials have not yet provided details regarding the cause of the crash, the Somali government continues search and rescue operations at the crash site in collaboration with relevant authorities.
The statement added: “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected. Further information will be provided to the public as the investigation progresses.”
