C919 Reaches 1 Million Passengers on Domestic Flights

China’s domestically produced passenger aircraft, the C919, has achieved a significant milestone by carrying 1 million passengers on domestic routes. China Eastern Airlines celebrated this accomplishment on December 19, 2024, during a Shanghai-Xi’an flight. This success marks a crucial step for the C919’s recognition in the global aviation market.

The Journey of the C919

Developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the C919 had its first delivery on December 9, 2022, and began commercial operations on May 28, 2023, with a Shanghai-Beijing flight. Today, the three major Chinese airlines operate a combined total of 14 C919 aircraft for regular domestic services.

China Eastern and the C919 Fleet’s Impact

China Eastern Airlines, the largest operator of the C919, connects Shanghai to key cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Xi’an, and Taiyuan with its nine C919 aircraft. China Southern Airlines operates three C919 jets on routes linking Guangzhou with Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Haikou. Air China utilizes its two C919 aircraft on the Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Hangzhou routes.

A Competitor to Boeing and Airbus

The C919 is positioned as a direct competitor to Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 models. As a narrow-body, single-aisle aircraft, it offers an alternative in the highly competitive civil aviation market dominated by these two major players. With the introduction of the C919, China aims to play a larger role in a sector historically led by the U.S.-based Boeing and Europe’s Airbus.

Key Components and Future Plans

While the C919’s design was developed in China, critical components such as the jet engine and flight control software are produced by U.S.-based companies like General Electric and Honeywell. This reveals the aircraft is not entirely domestic, though it remains a significant step in advancing China’s technological capabilities.

COMAC is also developing new aircraft, including the C909 for short-haul flights and the C929 for long-haul routes. The C929 is a pivotal project that could help establish China as a global aviation power.

A New Chapter in Chinese Civil Aviation

The C919’s emergence on the global stage represents a major milestone in achieving China’s strategic goals in the aviation sector. Strengthening domestic production capabilities and increasing market share internationally positions China as an increasingly competitive player in the global aviation industry.
