Budget Crisis in the US Hits Aviation Sector

The shutdown of the federal government in the United States due to the budget crisis has led to major safety concerns in the aviation sector. With the suspension of spending following the budget dispute in the Senate, more than 2,350 aviation security specialists have been placed on unpaid leave. Air traffic controllers, on the other hand, are forced to continue their duties without pay.

In a statement by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), it was emphasised that this situation would cause serious disruptions in critical safety, technology, and operational support work.

Controllers, who have recently been at the centre of criticism due to the increase in air traffic accidents, continue their shifts despite funding cuts. Just before the government shutdown, the collision of two Delta passenger aircraft on the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport further heightened concerns about aviation safety.

While the uncertainty over when a budget deal will be reached in Congress continues, tens of thousands of people working in the aviation sector carry on with their duties in a stressful and unsafe environment.
