Concerns Rise Among British Tourists Ahead of Turkey Trips: Heat Warnings from Marmaris Go Viral

British tourists planning their summer holidays in Turkey have expressed concern following a viral video on social media highlighting soaring temperatures. With reports of temperatures reaching 42°C in Marmaris, British travellers are being warned to prepare for extreme heat.

Turkey: A Top Holiday Destination for Brits

According to a survey by British travel agency On the Beach, Turkey has overtaken Spain as the most popular summer destination for UK tourists in 2024. Bookings to Turkey have increased by 54% over the past two years, with British holidaymakers drawn to the country’s sunny weather and scenic beaches.

However, record-breaking heat this summer has prompted some to reconsider their travel plans. Locals are urging tourists—especially those visiting in July and August—to be cautious of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.

Rising Concerns Ahead of Holidays

Some users took to social media to voice their concerns:

  • “We’re coming in August—hopefully, it cools down by then.”

  • “That’s dangerously hot.”

  • “I was in Antalya at the end of July last year. It was 52°C every day. It was unbearable.”

Others questioned the accuracy of the viral video, suggesting that the frying pan shown may have been pre-heated and that an egg wouldn’t cook instantly at 42°C ambient temperature.

Temperature Gap Between Marmaris and London

According to BBC Weather, temperatures in Marmaris are expected to hover around 35°C this week. In comparison, London is forecasted to see milder conditions between 23°C and 25°C. This stark difference may make it harder for British tourists to adapt to the Turkish heat.

Expert Heatwave Warning: Protect Your Health

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has warned that heatwaves pose serious health risks—especially for the elderly, people with chronic conditions, and those on multiple medications.

Recommended precautions during extreme heat include:

  • Avoid going outside during peak sunlight hours.

  • Wear wide-brimmed hats, high-SPF sunscreen, and light-coloured, breathable clothing.

  • Stay hydrated and choose cool foods.

  • Avoid alcohol to help regulate body temperature.
