American aviation giant Boeing has reached a major milestone by restarting production of its 737 MAX aircraft at its Renton facility. Production resumed on December 6, 2024, after a seven-week strike involving 33,000 workers. This move accelerates Boeing’s efforts to fulfill 4,200 pending orders and meet global aviation demand.
Challenges in Production Amid FAA Oversight
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Mike Whitaker noted that inspections of Boeing’s production processes are ongoing. The company faces challenges in raising its monthly production targets, having been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory hurdles.
Following a safety incident in January, the FAA capped production at 38 aircraft per month. Financial analysts at Jefferies project that Boeing will produce an average of 29 aircraft per month in 2025, falling short of its targeted capacity of 56 planes per month.
Systematic Production Issues and Safety Concerns
Boeing has faced significant criticism regarding safety standards in its production processes. Hundreds of whistleblower reports to the FAA have highlighted issues such as defective parts and deficiencies in quality control procedures.
Former Boeing employee Sam Mohawk criticized the company’s focus on production speed, claiming that poorly managed “part warehouses” stored defective components. These lapses have raised concerns about manufacturing errors that could jeopardize passenger safety.
In response to these allegations, Boeing has undergone leadership changes to rebuild trust. Under the leadership of new CEO Kelly Ortberg, the company aims to enhance both production efficiency and safety standards.
