Boeing 787 Engine Catches Fire, Returns to Rome After Takeoff

A Boeing 787 passenger aircraft, departing from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport for Shenzhen, China, experienced an engine fire shortly after takeoff. The flight had 249 passengers and 16 crew members on board. Following the fire in the right engine, the plane was forced to activate emergency landing procedures and return to Fiumicino Airport.

Emergency and Safe Landing

After the fire was detected, the captain immediately contacted Rome air traffic control to request permission for an emergency landing. To ensure passenger safety, the Boeing 787 dumped excess fuel into the sea before safely returning to Fiumicino. Italian security officials later reported that the engine fire was caused by a bird strike.

Panic on Board the Boeing 787

The engine fire caused panic among passengers, as the flight was preparing for a long-haul journey from Rome. During the emergency landing process, the flight crew quickly implemented safety protocols to keep passengers calm. Upon landing, fire crews were dispatched to the aircraft to ensure safety and to tackle the engine fire.

Flight Rescheduled

Following inspections, it was determined that the aircraft needed to undergo technical maintenance. The Boeing 787 is scheduled to resume its flight to Shenzhen on Sunday, after completing the necessary checks. Boeing officials confirmed that a technical evaluation of the incident is underway.
