A Malaysia Airlines flight, MH705, en route from Manila, Philippines, to Kuala Lumpur, suffered an engine malfunction after a bird strike. Following the incident, the aircraft’s left engine developed a fault, prompting the crew to safely return to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.
Passengers reported that the incident occurred yesterday afternoon. It is believed that one of the engines caught fire following the bird strike. A passenger, X (formerly Twitter) user @dasunhegoda, stated that the engine failed and caught fire shortly after take-off. He even shared a photo showing flames coming from the engine during the flight.
In an official statement, Malaysia Airlines emphasised that the pilots and cabin crew ensured the passengers’ safe return. The airline underlined that passenger safety is their top priority, stating:
“We are relieved to hear that you are safe and appreciate your understanding in such a challenging situation. The safety and well-being of our passengers are always our top priorities.” The airline also expressed regret for any disruptions to travel plans.

The Filipino aviation news platform, Aviation Updates Philippines, released a video of the incident, showing flames and smoke coming from the aircraft’s left engine.
One of the passengers on board, Facebook user Adely Kassim, mentioned that the cabin lights flickered but did not initially realise the engine had caught fire. Kassim wrote:
“However, the vibrations did not feel normal. The flight returned safely to Manila airport.”
