Malaysia is purchasing a Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) worth $68 million from Turkey to strengthen its maritime security. This significant move will enhance Malaysia’s security capacity against threats in the South China Sea.
The procurement process was finalized with an official acceptance ceremony at Turkey’s DESAN Shipyard, marking a critical step in regional maritime security.
Agreement Details
Malaysia’s Secretary-General of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Datuk Awang Alik bin Jeman, emphasized the importance of this agreement for both countries. During the Signing Ceremony of the Letter of Acceptance (SST), it was stated that a strategic partnership in the fields of defense industry and maritime security was being established.
The agreement was formalized during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to Malaysia, where a contract was signed. The session, attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, further strengthened cooperation between the two nations.

Malaysia’s Maritime Security Capacity Strengthens
The construction of the MPMS will be completed at DESAN Shipyard before being delivered to Malaysia, where it will provide effective patrolling capacity in the South China Sea. The new vessel will strengthen Malaysia’s ability to combat maritime border violations, smuggling, illegal fishing, and transnational crimes.
With this new ship, Malaysia will maximize its maritime security capacity in the most efficient and modern way, demonstrating a stronger stance against regional threats. Additionally, it will further advance the strategic defense partnership between Turkey and Malaysia.
