Beating Cancer, Returning to the Skies: An Emotional Film from Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines has produced a special film for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, telling the inspiring story of Captain Pilot Bilge Derin and her former nurse, now Second Officer Osman Taşkın.
Turkish Airlines (THY) has released a special commercial for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing a story full of hope, solidarity, and inspiration to the screen.
The film tells the true story of Captain Pilot Bilge Derin, who returned to the skies after overcoming breast cancer, and Osman Taşkın — who supported her during her treatment, then working as a nurse, and who now serves as a Second Officer at Turkish Airlines.
From Challenging Treatment to the Skies
In 2018, Captain Pilot Bilge Derin was diagnosed with breast cancer. After approximately ten months of a difficult treatment process, she managed to beat the disease and returned to her role as a pilot. During her treatment, she met nurse Osman Taşkın, who became one of the key figures providing her with morale and support throughout her recovery.
Known for his passion for aviation, nurse Osman Taşkın’s biggest dream was to become a pilot. During her treatment, Derin encouraged Taşkın to pursue this dream. After years of training and hard work, Osman Taşkın achieved his goal and began serving as a Second Officer at Turkish Airlines.
A Friendship from Hospital Room to Cockpit
A friendship that once began in a hospital room now continues in the same cockpit. In the commercial prepared by Turkish Airlines, the story of these two inspiring individuals is shared with the audience under the theme “The Power of Hope, Solidarity, and Dreams.”
Captain Pilot Bilge Derin expresses her feelings in the film with these words:
“During the toughest period of my treatment, I met nurse Osman. He made my painful treatments cheerful. When I fell, he held my hand, lifted me up, and said, ‘Come on, you can do it!’ His childhood dream was to become a pilot; he just needed courage. So I told him, ‘You can do it too.’”
Second Officer Osman Taşkın emphasised that Captain Bilge’s support was a turning point in his life:
“When I met Captain Bilge in the hospital, her determination inspired me. When she said, ‘You can do it too,’ I believed her. Now we share the same cockpit. We are now two travellers under the same sky.”
A Message of Hope and Solidarity from Turkish Airlines
With this emotional film, Turkish Airlines aims to draw attention to the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer while highlighting hope and solidarity through real human stories.
