The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has shifted its preference toward Turkey after experiencing disappointment with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) purchased from China. UAVs developed by Baykar Technology have garnered international attention for their reliability and technological superiority.

Delivery of Bayraktar Akıncı to UAE by Baykar

According to foreign sources, Baykar delivered two Bayraktar Akıncı (Raider) twin-engine UAVs to the UAE at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. Notably, The Eurasian Times reported that one Akıncı was delivered in December 2023, while the other followed in January 2024. However, no visuals or detailed information about these deliveries have been shared.

Major Deal Between UAE and Baykar

Under an agreement signed in 2022, the UAE placed an order with Baykar for:

  • 60 Bayraktar TB2s
  • 60 Bayraktar Akıncıs

As more details of this significant agreement surface, Baykar’s year-end reports reveal that Bayraktar Akıncı UAVs were also delivered to Pakistan in July 2023 and Azerbaijan in November 2024.

China’s UAVs Falling Out of Favor

Technical problems with Chinese UAVs have prompted many countries to distance themselves from these platforms. For instance, Iraq has reportedly decommissioned much of its Chinese UAV fleet, raising questions about the reliability of these products.

The Eurasian Times commented: “The UAE’s decision to retire its Chinese-made UAVs and opt for Turkish platforms could weaken China’s influence in the UAV market.”

Turkey’s Rise Against U.S. and China

The growing preference for Turkish UAVs in Gulf countries can also be attributed to the U.S.’s inability to meet advanced UAV demands in a timely manner. This situation has led nations like the UAE to turn to the Turkish defense industry, which offers faster and more reliable solutions.

Comments from Aviation Editor Mevlüt Zor:

The UAE’s decision to pivot from Chinese UAVs to Turkish alternatives underscores the trust Baykar has earned on the international stage. The success of Bayraktar TB2 and Akıncı UAVs extends beyond technology; these platforms have proven their capabilities in the field and established themselves as dependable assets for their users.

Technical issues with Chinese UAVs have prompted countries like the UAE to seek more reliable alternatives, paving the way for Turkey’s defense industry. With rapid delivery schedules and technological superiority, Turkey has become an attractive partner not only for the UAE but also for other nations in the region.

These developments not only strengthen Turkey’s position in the defense sector but also open new doors in international relations. The story of Turkish UAVs exemplifies how strategic and timely actions can lead to significant achievements. It seems this success story is one that will continue to resonate for a long time!
