A British Airways flight from Istanbul to London was diverted to Bucharest, Romania’s capital, after smoke was detected in the cabin. Four of the 142 passengers on board were affected by the smoke.
The British Airways Airbus A320 aircraft operating flight BA603 from Istanbul to London made an emergency landing in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, after smoke was detected in the cabin. It was reported that four passengers were slightly affected due to smoke inhalation.
All 142 passengers on board were safely evacuated thanks to the quick intervention of the crew. According to flight radar data, the aircraft declared an emergency at 17:50 local time and landed safely at Henri Coandă International Airport at 18:14.
Immediate Response from Medical Teams
Immediately after landing, Romanian emergency medical teams boarded the aircraft and treated four passengers affected by the smoke. The Romanian Ministry of Health confirmed that smoke had been detected in the cabin and stated:
“Four individuals were examined for suspected smoke inhalation, but hospitalization was not required.”
British Airways: “We Took a Precautionary Measure”
In an official statement, British Airways emphasised that the emergency landing was a precautionary measure:
“The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority. Our crew decided to divert the aircraft as a precaution after a suspected technical issue.”
It was learned that the technical inspection of the aircraft is ongoing, and passengers are being accommodated at the airport before being flown to London on an alternative flight.
