Azman Air Denies Allegations of Aircraft Sale to Iran, Initiates Legal Action

Nigerian airline Azman Air has categorically denied allegations of selling its aircraft to Iran, describing the claims as unfounded and announcing the initiation of legal proceedings against such reports.

“Our Aircraft Was in Iran for Routine Maintenance Only”

Azman Air’s Accountable Manager, Muhammad AbdulManaf, clarified that their aircraft was sent to Iran solely for a mandatory C-check maintenance procedure required by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). AbdulManaf stated, “Our aircraft underwent routine maintenance checks that are required every 18 months. I was shocked when I heard allegations that we had sold the aircraft to Iran. This is completely false news.”

“Sale Impossible Without NCAA Approval”

AbdulManaf emphasized that the sale of any Nigeria-registered aircraft is only possible with NCAA approval and the completion of official procedures. “NCAA has not received any document from us regarding the sale or deregistration of the aircraft. The plane remains under our control,” he said.

Transponder Deactivation Allegations Under Investigation

According to reports, an Azman Air aircraft allegedly deactivated its ADS-B transponder while in Iranian airspace and landed at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport. AbdulManaf stated that they have sought an explanation from the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority regarding the transponder deactivation. “If the transponder was turned off beyond our jurisdiction, we need clarification from Iranian authorities. However, we have not received any complaints on this matter so far,” he added.

Free Trade Agreements Among D8 Countries

Muhammad AbdulManaf pointed out that no sanctions exist between Nigeria and Iran, highlighting the free trade agreements under the Developing-8 (D8) Organization for Economic Cooperation. “There are free trade agreements for aviation services and products among D8 member countries,” he noted.

Suspicious Allegations from the Middle East

A Middle East-based news agency claimed that Azman Air assisted the Iranian aviation industry in circumventing U.S. sanctions. Allegedly, an Azman Air Airbus A340-642 wide-body aircraft was delivered to Iran’s largest airline, Mahan Air, on November 15, 2024.

According to the report, the aircraft entered Iranian airspace en route from Kano to Kabul, turned off its transponder at 39,000 feet, and eventually landed at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport.

Azman Air Strongly Refutes Allegations

Azman Air reiterated that the claims are baseless and reaffirmed that the airline operates in full compliance with international aviation regulations. “Such speculations aim to tarnish our reputation. We have initiated legal action and will ensure the truth comes to light,” the company declared.
