Aviation Revives in Syria: Syrianair Prepares for Moscow Flights

Following the formation of a new government in Syria, Damascus International Airport resumed operations on December 19, 2023, after its closure on December 8. The inaugural flight to Aleppo marked a significant step towards restoring air travel within the country.

Damascus International Airport, situated in Syria’s capital, reopened today, signaling a major milestone in the country’s aviation sector. The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) confirmed that the country’s airspace is now deemed safe for flights.

The First Flight Resumes

The first flight after reopening was operated by Syrianair, departing from Damascus and landing in Aleppo. This flight symbolizes a critical move in reviving Syria’s air travel industry after a prolonged suspension.

Flights Operate Under Special Permits

The SCAA has stipulated that flights can only operate under specific conditions. Adjustments to NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) regulations have restricted flights to two operational airports—Damascus and Aleppo—requiring special permission from the authority.

While Syrian airspace is technically operational, international airlines remain cautious, with many opting for alternative routes due to ongoing security concerns.

Closure of Damascus Airport

Damascus International Airport was closed on December 8, 2023, when opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took control of the capital. This followed the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime and subsequent political and military turmoil.

The closure halted the operations of the country’s two active airlines, Syrianair and Cham Wings Airlines, leaving them unable to conduct flights for months due to safety concerns and restricted airspace.

Syrianair Plans New Flights

Syrianair has announced its plans to resume international services, with scheduled flights to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport commencing on December 18.

Despite this development, international carriers remain hesitant about using Syrian airspace. The lack of clarity regarding security conditions continues to hinder the region’s integration into global aviation networks.

Reopening Damascus Airport: Significance and Uncertainty

The reopening of Damascus International Airport represents a pivotal moment in Syria’s path to normalizing its air travel operations. The first resumed flight to Aleppo marks a hopeful start, but significant uncertainties remain about when the airspace will fully stabilize and when international airlines will reinstate flights to Syria.

The country’s ability to ensure long-term safety and foster trust among global aviation partners will be key in determining the future of its air travel industry.
