Aviation Industry in 2024: Strong Financial Performance

Global Aviation Revenues on the Rise

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts that global airline revenues will reach nearly $1 trillion in 2024. This projection is driven in large part by the financial performance of the four major U.S. airlines: Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.

Financial Highlights of Major U.S. Airlines

Data from the first two quarters of 2024 reflect robust financial results:

  • United Airlines (UA): $24.99 billion in revenue, $1.2 billion net income
  • Delta Air Lines (DL): $24.97 billion in revenue, $1.3 billion net income
  • American Airlines (AA): $24.66 billion in revenue, $405 million net income
  • Southwest Airlines (WN): $12.42 billion in revenue, $137 million net income

These carriers are expected to contribute approximately 20% to global airline revenues.

Q3 2024: Mixed Financial Outcomes

The third-quarter results reveal the industry’s resilience amid economic fluctuations:

  • United Airlines: $14.8 billion in revenue (+2.5%); $1.0 billion net income.
  • Delta Air Lines: $15.7 billion in revenue (+1.2%); net income rose by 15% to $1.27 billion.
  • American Airlines: $13.6 billion in revenue but reported a $149 million net loss.
  • Southwest Airlines: $6.9 billion in revenue (+5.3%); $67 million net income.

Resilience and Challenges in the Sector

According to analysts, airlines’ financial successes are due to:

  • Operational improvements
  • Route optimization
  • Rebounding post-pandemic travel demand

However, challenges like capacity constraints and rising operational costs persist.

  • United Airlines: Reducing domestic capacity.
  • Southwest Airlines: Anticipating stagnant revenue growth in Q3.
  • Delta Air Lines: Limited capacity expansion planned for the July–September period.

Fleet Compositions and Expansion Plans

United Airlines: 986 aircraft, average fleet age of 16.3 years; plans to add 700 new aircraft by 2033.
Delta Air Lines: 991 aircraft, average age 15.3 years; operates the largest Airbus A220, Boeing 717, and Boeing 757 fleets globally.
American Airlines: 971 aircraft, 80% narrow-body (Airbus A320 and Boeing 737); has 338 new aircraft on order.
Southwest Airlines: 828 aircraft, all from the Boeing 737 family; holds the largest order for Boeing 737 MAX 7 with 342 on order.

Outlook for Aviation in 2024

As the industry accelerates its recovery from the pandemic, it navigates a balance between financial success and operational complexity. Major U.S. carriers remain pivotal to the sector’s momentum, leveraging strategic investments and growth plans.
