The inclusion of Swedish-made Saab Gripen fighter jets in Ukraine’s inventory could create a significant shift in the country’s air defence capabilities. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has confirmed that, alongside the Gripens, Mirage and F-16 aircraft will also be delivered to the country.
Delivery Process and Uncertainties
The exact delivery dates and the number of aircraft to be sent have not yet been finalised. In an interview with BBC News Ukraine, Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Major General Ivan Havryliuk avoided providing specifics on the aircraft types and quantities, stating, “You will understand when you see them in Ukrainian skies.”
Key Features of the Gripen
The Saab Gripen C/D model is among the fourth-generation multirole fighter jets. Capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, the aircraft stands out for its modern radar systems, advanced avionics, and rapid operational capability from different bases.
Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson has confirmed that Stockholm is open to negotiations regarding the supply of former Gripen C/D jets to Ukraine, acknowledging the possibility.
