On Thursday, an American Airlines flight heading to Houston was forced to make an emergency landing due to an engine failure.
American Airlines Flight 1478, an Airbus A321, departed from Charlotte Douglas International Airport heading to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston. Due to a potential maintenance issue, the flight was diverted to Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN) in Jackson, Mississippi. The plane safely landed at 13:47.
In a statement, American Airlines said, “The flight safely landed at JAN and taxied to the gate under its own power. The aircraft was taken out of service for inspection by our maintenance team, and passengers were rebooked onto a replacement aircraft to continue to Houston. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
Passengers, who had to wait for seven hours at the Jackson airport, were later flown to Houston on another plane. One of the passengers, Michael Jones, expressed, “I’m glad they stopped the plane because who knows, it could have been a worse accident. I’m happy everyone is safe.”
American Airlines has been in the news recently for several incidents. On January 29, an American Airlines flight, Flight 5342, collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in a tragic crash that killed 67 people. This was one of the deadliest aviation accidents in the U.S. in decades. Last week, another American Airlines flight traveling from Austin to Charlotte had to be evacuated due to a potential bomb threat before takeoff.
