Airports with the Highest Flight Cancellation Rates in 2024 Announced

Stormy weather, technical issues, and various industry challenges made 2024 a difficult year for flight operations, with significant flight cancellations. Data provided by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and analysed by AirAdvisor revealed the airports with the highest flight cancellation rates from January to November 2024.

Southampton Airport Tops the List for Cancellations

Southampton Airport recorded the highest flight cancellation rate in 2024. In November, cancellations surged to 5.5%, bringing the annual average to 3.3%, placing it at the top of the list. Adverse weather conditions and technical disruptions were the key contributing factors.

London City Airport followed closely behind with a 2.9% flight cancellation rate.

Weather Conditions and Industrial Actions Led to Disruptions

AirAdvisor CEO Anton Radchenko commented on the situation, stating:

“2024 was particularly challenging for Southampton Airport. In February alone, cancellations peaked at 4.9%. Adverse weather and industrial actions played a significant role, though last-minute strike cancellations slightly alleviated the impact.”

Radchenko also highlighted that January and February were the most problematic months for airports due to storms, snow, and fog.

Passenger Rights in Case of Cancellations

Radchenko emphasised the importance of passengers being aware of their rights in case of flight cancellations. He reminded travellers that they are entitled to be rebooked on an alternative flight.

“If your airline cannot rebook you within a reasonable time, they are obligated to offer you a flight with an alternative carrier. Additionally, if you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a full refund.”

Furthermore, if a flight is cancelled within two weeks of departure and the passenger is flying with a UK or EU-based airline, they may be eligible for compensation of up to £520.

Airports with the Lowest Cancellation Rates

On the other hand, some airports maintained an impressive record with minimal cancellations in 2024. Liverpool, Luton, and Bournemouth airports stood out for their operational efficiency. Bournemouth Airport, in particular, recorded the lowest cancellation rate at just 0.04%.
