An eight-member expert delegation from Turkey has arrived in Dhaka to investigate the cause of the major fire that devastated the cargo terminal at Bangladesh’s main airport. Turkish and Bangladeshi officials will work closely together throughout the investigation.
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is hosting an expert team from Turkey following the devastating fire on October 18 in the cargo section of the country’s main airport, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The Turkish team will assist Bangladeshi authorities in determining the cause of the incident and carrying out technical inspections.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the eight-member Turkish investigation team, led by First-Class Chief Inspector Oykun İlgun, met with Sheikh Bashiruddin, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, upon their arrival in Dhaka.
During the meeting, steps for technical cooperation between the two countries, coordination of the investigation process, and measures to restore airport operations were discussed.
The ministry’s statement noted that Undersecretary Bashiruddin welcomed Turkey’s support, stating that this collaboration “will strengthen bilateral relations and play a significant role in advancing the investigation activities.”
Fire Halts Airport Operations
The fire broke out in the section of the cargo terminal where imported goods were stored, completely halting airport operations in Dhaka. A total of 37 teams, including personnel from the Bangladesh Army, Air Force, and Navy, were deployed to respond to the fire.
Authorities reported that all imported goods stored in the cargo facility were damaged, although the financial losses have not yet been determined.
This incident marks the third major industrial fire in Bangladesh in October. Earlier fires at factories in Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram resulted in at least 16 deaths. Experts have indicated that this situation calls for a review of fire safety standards across the country.
