Airlines to Compensate Passengers for Flight Delays

The General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) has made compensation mandatory for passengers affected by flight delays. Compensation will range from €100 for domestic flights to €250-€600 for international flights, depending on the distance.

The General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) has introduced a significant amendment to the SHY-YOLCU Regulation, which safeguards airline passenger rights. Under the new rule, airlines are now required to compensate passengers for delays. The decision has been published in the Official Gazette and is now in effect.

Compensation Rights for Delays Over 3 Hours

According to SHGM’s regulation, passengers whose flights are delayed due to technical or operational reasons, causing them to arrive at their planned destination 3 hours or more late, will be entitled to compensation.

The compensation amounts are as follows:

  • Domestic Flights: €100
  • International Flights:
    • Flights up to 1,500 kilometers: €250
    • Flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometers: €400
    • Flights over 3,500 kilometers: €600

The Turkish Lira equivalent will be calculated based on the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey’s exchange rate on the date the compensation is paid.
