The popular Airbus Helicopters model H125 has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for single-pilot Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) capability. This approval paves the way for the first deliveries from the Airbus Helicopters assembly line in Columbus, Mississippi, in 2025.
Developed by Moog in collaboration with Genesys Aerosystems, this new IFR capability features an upgraded cockpit, a new autopilot system with redundant hydraulic and electrical systems. The advanced avionics enable pilots to fly more safely and efficiently in low visibility and adverse weather conditions.
Enhanced Safety and Efficiency
The IFR capability reduces the pilot’s workload while providing improved situational awareness. This feature enhances operational efficiency while maintaining the power, safety, versatility, and manoeuvrability that make the H125 unmatched in the light single-engine helicopter segment.
Jérome Ronssin, Head of the Airbus Helicopters Light Helicopter Programme, said, “By adding this functionality to a light single-engine helicopter, Airbus Helicopters enables operators to perform complex operations with lower operating costs. The new IFR feature will expand operational capabilities, particularly for critical public service missions such as law enforcement, emergency medical services, and pilot training.”
Maintaining Market Leadership
Currently, over 4,300 H125 family helicopters are active in the most challenging conditions worldwide. In 2024, the H125 reached an 80% market share, maintaining its leadership in the medium single-engine helicopter segment. The Ecureuil family celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first flight in 2024, having accumulated 40 million flight hours.
Equipped with the new IFR capability, the H125 will continue to provide an important solution in public service operations, especially in the North American market, while responding to growing global demand.
