The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, June 26, near Harry Reid International Airport. The American Airlines flight, which had departed from Las Vegas, made an emergency landing after smoke and flames were observed coming from the left engine while airborne.
Alarm Just Minutes After Takeoff
According to Flightradar24 data, Flight 1665, an Airbus A321, took off from Las Vegas at 8:11 a.m. local time en route to Charlotte, North Carolina. Shortly after departure, smoke was detected coming from the left engine, prompting the crew to decide to return as a precautionary measure.
The aircraft landed safely back at its departure airport around 8:20 a.m. In a statement released by the airline, it was confirmed that there were 153 passengers and 6 crew members on board at the time of the incident and that no one was harmed.
FAA Launches Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it has launched an official investigation into the incident. The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance and technical inspection.
A spokesperson for American Airlines stated, “Shortly after takeoff, an abnormal engine performance was detected. The flight crew followed standard procedures and initiated a safe return, prioritizing the safety of our passengers.”
