Airbus A220 May Be Headed to Malaysia! Official Talks Have Begun

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has officially entered into discussions with Malaysia Airlines regarding potential deliveries of its A220 aircraft. The news was shared with the public via the national news agency Bernama by Anand Stanley, Airbus President for the Asia-Pacific region.

Growing Interest in the A220 from Malaysia

Airbus sees strong potential for its A220 narrow-body aircraft in the Malaysian market, particularly for short- and medium-haul routes. Currently, around 150 commercial aircraft from various Airbus models are already operating in the country. Stanley expressed his optimism about the region’s prospects, stating:

“We see significant potential demand coming from Malaysia. We are still at the discussion stage. While I can’t comment on timing, we do hope to see the A220 in Malaysia.”

Asia-Pacific’s Third Largest Market

Airbus considers Malaysia its third-largest market in the Asia-Pacific region, following China and India. According to the company, there is potential for around 400 more aircraft deliveries across the region.

Airbus Customers in Malaysia

Airbus currently has two major customers in Malaysia:

  • AirAsia: A major operator of the A320 and A330 series.

  • Malaysia Airlines: Operates a fleet composed of Airbus wide-body aircraft.

A220: The Rising Star of Regional Aviation

The Airbus A220 stands out for its fuel efficiency, low operating costs, and environmentally friendly design. With a seating capacity of 100 to 150 passengers, it is considered an ideal choice for both regional and medium-haul routes.
