Air Traffic Paralysed in Peru: Radar Crisis at Jorge Chavez Airport

Jorge Chavez International Airport, located in Lima, the capital of Peru, experienced serious disruptions to air traffic due to a temporary malfunction in its radar system. Following the radar outage, numerous flights were delayed, and passengers faced difficulties with check-in and baggage handling.

20 Flights Affected

Corpac, the state-owned company responsible for air traffic control in Peru, announced that safety protocols were activated after the radar failure and that departures from all airports across the country were temporarily suspended. According to local sources, the system outage, which lasted approximately 62 minutes, directly affected a total of 20 flights — 17 domestic and 3 international.

Airport Operations Suspended

The malfunction in the radar system impacted not only flights but also baggage handling and check-in operations. Consequently, long queues formed inside the terminal, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. The incident began at around 2:30 pm local time, and flight operations gradually returned to normal after the system was restored at 3:35 pm.

Similar Malfunction Occurred in February

This radar malfunction is not the first technical issue experienced at Jorge Chavez Airport this year. A similar radar problem occurred on 13 February 2025, resulting in the cancellation of numerous flights. Experts highlight that these consecutive disruptions indicate an urgent need to reassess and upgrade the airport’s infrastructure systems.
