Air India, owned by Tata Group, continues to revolutionize customer service by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Since May 2023, its AI-powered chatbot has been processing an average of 30,000 queries per day, independently answering 97% of customer inquiries.
Air India’s technical team has integrated this chatbot with the airline’s specific systems to prevent racial biases. This AI solution combines Large Language Models (LLMs) with special security measures to provide neutral and appropriate responses to customer queries. Air India’s innovative approach has caught the attention of many major U.S. and European airlines, which are keen to learn from Air India’s experience in developing similar AI solutions.
Technological Transformation and Competitive Advantage
Air India’s Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Satya Ramaswamy, emphasizes that AI technology provides a critical competitive edge for the airline. The system, known as AI.g, is a key part of the airline’s digital transformation process. While maintaining its technological superiority, Air India also supports other airlines in this area, solidifying its leadership in the sector.
This AI-driven transformation goes beyond customer service. Air India aims to streamline the ticket purchasing process with its first patent for a “one-click booking” feature, allowing faster and more efficient transactions on the airline’s website and mobile apps.
Global Airline Alliances and Codeshare Strategy
In addition to its digital advancements, Air India is expanding through international partnerships. The Gurugram-based carrier plans to implement new codeshare agreements with Air Canada and United Airlines. The partnership with United Airlines, in particular, is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Air India’s position in the U.S. market, allowing access to a broader passenger base on the India-U.S. route.
Furthermore, ongoing alliance talks with Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines are part of Air India’s plans to expand operations from its Delhi and Mumbai hubs. The codeshare strategy enhances operational cooperation among airlines, offering passengers unified routes, seamless check-in processes, and integrated frequent flyer programs.
Strategic Mergers and Market Consolidation
Tata Group is accelerating Air India’s growth through a consolidation strategy in the aviation sector. Following the successful merger of Air India Express and AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) on October 1st, the integration of Vistara into Air India is planned for November 11th. These mergers will strengthen Air India’s presence in the international market, offering passengers a wider range of flight options and enhanced services.
