India’s civil aviation regulatory authority has announced the extension of the ongoing aircraft lease agreement between InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) and Turkish Airlines (THY) for an additional three months.
As part of a strategic partnership signed in 2023, IndiGo leased two wide-body Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from Turkish Airlines. These aircraft, along with a limited number of Turkish pilots and cabin crew, were assigned to support IndiGo’s operations on routes between Istanbul, New Delhi, and Mumbai.
The decision to extend the agreement came after Air India submitted a formal request to Indian authorities on May 16. In its petition, Air India cited potential risks to market competition and security concerns related to Turkey’s diplomatic support for Pakistan as grounds to terminate the partnership between IndiGo and Turkish Airlines.
However, the regulatory body evaluated the agreement within the legal framework and approved its extension for an additional three months. As a result, the aviation collaboration between Turkish Airlines and IndiGo will continue to play a pivotal role in regional air travel.
