908 Trees Saved, 496 Tonnes of Raw Materials Preserved
HEAŞ, a subsidiary of the Presidency of Defence Industries and the airport authority of Sabiha Gökçen Airport, continues to set an example in sustainable airport management through its eco-friendly practices implemented between 2020 and 2025. With comprehensive efforts focused on recycling, energy efficiency, and emission reduction, significant environmental contributions have been made.
Recycling of Paper, Plastic, Metal, and Glass Waste
According to HEAŞ data, over the past five years:
-
53,418 kilograms of paper were recycled, saving 908 trees from being cut down.
-
16,204 kilograms of plastic waste were recycled, saving the equivalent of 264 barrels of oil.
-
382,063 kilograms of metal were recycled, conserving 496 tonnes of raw materials.
-
Recycling of glass waste resulted in the preservation of 8 tonnes of raw materials, 283 kilowatt-hours of energy, and the reduction of 202 kilograms of greenhouse gases.
36-Tonne Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions
All recycling activities combined have led to a reduction of 36,296 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions—contributing directly to the long-term reduction of the airport’s carbon footprint.
Green Transport Initiative with Electric Vehicles
As part of its vision for sustainable transportation, HEAŞ has added 5 electric vehicles to its fleet. This initiative has saved 1,000 litres of fuel and prevented 2.68 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
HEAŞ’s Goal: Net Zero Emissions by 2053
Certified with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and the “Zero Waste Certificate,” HEAŞ aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41% by 2030 and to achieve net zero emissions by 2053.
