SunExpress, a joint venture of Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, has taken another significant step in aviation technology as part of its environmental sustainability goals. The company has successfully completed the first phase of its “Finlet” project, carried out in collaboration with Vortex Control Technologies (VCT).
As part of the initiative launched in May 2024, VCT Finlets – a next-generation aerodynamic winglet technology – were integrated into the aft fuselage of Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This innovative system optimises airflow to enhance flight performance, reducing drag and thereby lowering fuel consumption and minimising carbon emissions.
Moving to Phase Two After Successful Test Results
Following test implementations on five aircraft in the project’s first phase, data revealed the system’s strong performance in terms of fuel efficiency and environmental impact. After a year-long observation period, SunExpress has decided to expand the Finlet technology to more than 40 Boeing 737-800 aircraft in its fleet.
“A Concrete Step Towards Reducing Carbon Emissions”
Commenting on the initiative, SunExpress Chief Operating Officer Cemil Sayar said:
“Fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility are key pillars of our operational strategy. After a year of rigorous testing, we are taking a significant step towards reducing our carbon emissions by implementing this innovative solution across our fleet. This move aligns perfectly with our sustainable growth goals.”
“First Partnership in Europe”
Vortex Control Technologies CEO Gil Morgan added:
“Our Finlet technology, developed for the 737-700, 800, and 900ER models, is the result of years of engineering and testing. This partnership with SunExpress, our first in Europe, marks a significant milestone in contributing to the aviation industry’s green transformation.”
SunExpress Progresses Steadily Toward Its Sustainability Goals
With its innovative solutions, SunExpress is not only improving operational efficiency but also aiming to reduce the environmental impact of the aviation sector. This step taken with VCT’s Finlet technology has secured its place as a model initiative for the future of sustainable aviation.
