A fire broke out on an American Airlines plane. Passengers Evacuated
Panic ensued among passengers and crew at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) when a parked American Airlines aircraft caught fire. Emergency evacuation was initiated after crew reported smoke in the cabin while waiting at the aircraft door. The source of the smoke was traced to a passenger’s laptop in their bag.
Passenger Jan Jankai, onboard the flight, noted a burning wire smell upon boarding, which intensified over time. Jankai reported that shortly after, a large flame emerged from under his father’s seat, with smoke spreading rapidly. “We thought we were going to pass out,” said Jankai, describing how he and his father quickly unbuckled their seatbelts and headed towards the rear emergency exit.
Jankai’s father threw the burning bag out of the emergency exit, preventing the fire from escalating further. This swift action averted a potential disaster.
SFO authorities stated that three people sustained minor injuries during the evacuation. San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) confirmed that one of the injured individuals was taken to a local hospital. American Airlines acknowledged that one passenger sustained minor injuries while exiting the aircraft.
SFFD reported that the fire was caused by a battery fire and was extinguished by passengers. After gaining control of the situation, some passengers were evacuated using emergency slides.
