Istanbul Airport is set to implement a groundbreaking ‘simultaneous independent triple runway operation’ a first in Europe to be carried out by Turkish Airlines (THY). The operation, scheduled for 17th April, aims to enable three aircraft to land and take off simultaneously.
Istanbul Airport continues to lead the aviation sector with its innovative steps. This operation, a first of its kind in Europe, is hailed as a revolutionary advancement in air traffic management. The triple runway operation is designed to boost airport capacity while minimising operational delays.
On the day of the operation, the simultaneous landing of three THY aircraft is planned, with a special ceremony to be held at the airport, attended by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu. The activation of the new runways is expected to enhance flight efficiency, promote fuel savings, and reduce environmental impact.
Moreover, Turkey’s first domestically developed air traffic controller training simulator created in collaboration between the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) and TÜBİTAK is being used for training in preparation for the triple runway operation. These sessions, conducted in a 360-degree visual tower environment, allow air traffic controllers to practise using three-dimensional airport models.
