A Philippine Airlines passenger plane, en route from the Philippines to the United States, made an emergency landing in Tokyo after smoke was detected in the cabin, prompting a change in its flight path.
According to Phil Star newspaper, flight PR102, which had taken off from the capital Manila heading to Los Angeles, was diverted to Tokyo Haneda Airport after smoke was detected coming from the air conditioning unit. The pilots immediately activated emergency procedures and made the landing in Tokyo.
355 Passengers Safely Evacuated
All 355 passengers and crew on board were safely evacuated in coordination with authorities at Haneda Airport. Philippine Airlines stated that it worked closely with the Philippine Department of Transportation and Japanese civil aviation authorities regarding the incident.
Investigation Launched
Authorities announced that a detailed technical investigation into the source of the smoke is ongoing, and an official investigation into the incident has been initiated. It will be determined whether the aircraft can be cleared for flight after further evaluations.
