The Netherlands has decided to transfer 18 F-16 fighter jets to NATO ally Romania for a symbolic price of 1 Euro. The deliveries are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
A noteworthy defence cooperation agreement has been signed between the Netherlands and Romania. The Netherlands will transfer 18 F-16 fighter aircraft, which are being phased out of its inventory, to Romania for the symbolic price of 1 Euro. The agreement was announced during the NATO Summit held in The Hague.
Romanian Minister of Defence Ionuț Moșteanu, speaking at a joint press conference with President Nicușor Dan, emphasised that this strategic transfer would strengthen military cooperation between the two countries.
F-16 Fleet to Reach 67 Aircraft
Romania has been making significant efforts in recent years to strengthen its air force. The country already operates 17 F-16s acquired from Portugal between 2016–2017 and 2020–2021, along with 18 F-16s from Norway, the last two of which were delivered last month.
Under the agreement with Norway, 14 more F-16s are expected to be delivered by the end of 2025. With the 18 jets to come from the Netherlands, Romania’s total F-16 fleet will reach 67 aircraft.
Enhanced NATO Compatibility
According to experts, this move will not only boost Romania’s air defence capabilities within NATO but also significantly enhance its operational interoperability with the alliance.
